Local Area Information

Nether Hoff is a Grade 2* listed 17th Century house with an early date stone of 1863. The farm originally belonged to The Cliffords of Appleby Castle. The Barn and The Studio make up part of a large barn behind the main house, this barn was one of the largest barns in Westmorland with a former corn mill at the far end.

Appleby is built in on the River Eden and is a traditional medieval town with the castle at the top of the hill sloping gently downhill to the church. This is one of the prettiest market towns in England and despite once being the county town of Westmorland it retains a village atmosphere with a great deal of interest and charm. Appleby has plenty to offer holidaymakers, pubs, leisure centre, fantastic walks and beautifully restored buildings. In every season, it is a pleasure to stroll along ancient streets lined with enticing shop fronts or beside the River Eden. Appleby is just a few miles from the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making it a popular holiday destination all year round for those who enjoy being outdoors.

The scenic Carlisle to Settle railway route runs through Appleby and makes a great day out. Further afield, the Northumberland National Park along with Hadrian’s Wall and the Scottish Border are within an hours drive. Superb cycling, golf and fishing are all available near by.

Penrith is the nearest larger town, about 12 miles away, and has a direct rail line to London Euston (3hrs 15mins), Manchester (1hr 35mins) and Edinburgh (1hr 32mins). There are the usual range of shops and supermarkets including M & S, Booths, Sainsburys and Morrisons.
